Ravenna è universalmente nota come la città del mosaico. Il riferimento immediato è ai mosaici antichi, quali ad esempio quelli presenti nella Basilica di San Vitale o nel Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. Tuttavia, questa eredità storica si riflette anche sull’identità contemporanea della città: vi sono infatti numerosi richiami al mosaico sia tra le strutture di recente costruzione che tra gli arredi urbani e la segnaletica.

Ravenna is widely known as the city of mosaics. The immediate reference is to the ancient ones, such as those preserved in the Basilica of San Vitale. However, this historical heritage affects the identity of the contemporary city: several references to the mosaic are detectable among the modern buildings as well as in the street furniture and in the signage.

Persino nuove tecnologie come i QR code, pur non avendo nessuna relazione specifica con Ravenna, vengono accolte in un ideale percorso evolutivo della città e interpretate formalmente secondo la metafora del mosaico.

Even new technologies such as QR codes, although they don’t have any specific connection to Ravenna, are embraced within an ideal evolutionary process of the city and formally interpreted according to the metaphor of the mosaic.

Oggigiorno vi sono diversi artisti ravennati che includono tale tecnica nella propria pratica. Fra questi, il collettivo CaCO3 si distingue per una ricerca formale sui differenti parametri che caratterizzano il mosaico: dimensione delle tessere, inclinazione, colore e interstizio.

Nowadays several artists based in Ravenna include this technique in their practice. Among these, the collective CaCO3 carries on a formal research on the different parameters which characterize mosaics: size of tiles, trend, color and interstice.

Quest’ultimo parametro mi è parso particolarmente significativo poiché consente un’interpretazione del mosaico in senso più ampio: l'interstizio è quello spazio vuoto che dà forma e unità alla composizione mettendone in relazione gli elementi. È nell'interstizio che risiede la struttura. Si pensi ad esempio al modo in cui il manto stradale articola il tessuto urbano.

This last parameter seemed particularly significant to me because it allows a wider interpretation of the mosaic: the interstice is the empty space that gives shape and unity to the composition relating its elements. It is in the interstice that the structure resides. An example is the way the road surface articulates the urban tissue.

Con lo scopo di realizzare un manifesto, ho provato dunque a declinare i parametri del mosaico secondo gli strumenti del graphic design e della tipografia. L'esercizio compiuto è stato idealmente vicino a quello del mosaicista: ho cercato di conferire all'interstizio una conformazione riconoscibile, rispettando al tempo stesso il peso degli elementi pieni.

With the aim of designing a poster, I tried to decline the parameters of the mosaic according to the tools of graphic design and typography. The exercise I carried out was ideally parallel to that of the mosaicist: I tried to give the interstice a recognizable shape, while respecting, at the same time, the weight of the solid elements.

In particolare ho disegnato una serie di lettere, ognuna di esse basata sui limiti fisici del manifesto. Ciascun segno esprime un carattere diverso: forme più rigide evocano un’attitudine moderna, mentre configurazioni più arcaiche rimandano al passato di Ravenna. Tra di esse, ho scelto la lettera che meglio rappresenta un compromesso tra la suggestione del mosaico antico e lo spirito contemporaneo della città.

In particular, I designed a series of letters, each one based on the physical limitations of the poster. Each sign expresses a different character: more rigid forms evoke a modern attitude, while archaic configurations refer to Ravenna’s past. Among them, I chose the letter that best represents a compromise between the reference to the ancient mosaic and the contemporary spirit of the city.

Le tessere che compongono il mio mosaico sono tre visioni dall’alto del territorio di Ravenna, caratterizzate da tre livelli di ingrandimento differenti. Ognuna di esse descrive un aspetto specifico della città: il centro storico che ospita il suo patrimonio culturale; la zona industriale che ha mutato il carattere di Ravenna; infine il porto, imponente struttura che rievoca il rapporto della città con il mare e la sua origine lagunare.

The tiles that form my mosaic are three top visions of the territory of Ravenna, characterized by three different zoom levels. Each one describes a specific aspect of the city: the old town, with its cultural heritage; the industrial area that changed the character of the city; and finally the port, an imposing structure that evokes the city’s relationship with the sea and its lagoon origin.
